Ravi’s Journey: How Influence Shapes Career Choices

A young man’s path from peer pressure to parental expectations—and the triumph of finding his way

Ravi’s Story – Part 1: The Influences That Shaped His Path

Introduction: A Decision at 15 Ravi’s story begins when he was just 15 years old, standing at a crossroads like so many other young students. It was time to decide which stream he would pursue in grade 11, and for Ravi, the choice wasn’t as much about passion as it was about staying connected to his group of friends. Most of his friends had chosen the science stream, and despite having little clarity about his future, Ravi decided to follow the crowd.

Even though his school organized counseling sessions to guide students, Ravi was convinced that staying with his group was more important. He didn’t want to feel left out or isolated, so science it was.

The Engineering Journey:

Peer Pressure Becomes Parental Pressure After completing grade 12, Ravi appeared for entrance exams and managed to secure admission to an engineering college. However, the reality of engineering didn’t match his expectations. The courses felt uninspiring, and Ravi quickly realized that he wasn’t passionate about the field.

But when he voiced his concerns to his parents, they dismissed them.

“We’ve spent so much money on your education already. How can you even think of leaving now?” his father had said firmly.

Caught between his dissatisfaction and his parents’ expectations, Ravi decided to continue. He convinced himself that completing the degree was the only option, even if he didn’t enjoy it.

The MBA Decision:

Following the Trend as Ravi neared the end of his engineering degree, another influence crept into his life—the idea of pursuing an MBA. Everyone around him seemed to believe that an MBA was the golden ticket to a high-paying job, and Ravi was no exception. The engineering degree no longer seemed like enough to guarantee a bright future, so Ravi decided to appear for MBA entrance exams.

This time, the decision felt like his own, but it was heavily influenced by the buzz surrounding MBA graduates earning six-figure salaries. Ravi worked hard and got into a reputed business school. For a while, he felt like he was finally on the right track.

The Job Search:

Dreams Meet Reality After completing his MBA, Ravi expected the job offers to roll in. But reality wasn’t as simple as he had imagined. Despite his qualifications, Ravi struggled to secure a position that matched his aspirations. The competition was fierce, and companies seemed to favor candidates with more experience.

As weeks turned into months, Ravi began to feel the weight of his choices. He had followed every step that society, peers, and parents had deemed the “right” path, yet he found himself without the success he had envisioned.

The Government Job Decision:

A New Hope It was during this time of uncertainty that Ravi’s parents suggested he consider appearing for government job exams.

“A government job means stability,” his mother said. “You’ll have security, respect, and benefits. What more could you want?”

Ravi, feeling the pressure to make his family proud and secure his future, decided to give it a try. He poured all his energy into preparing for the exams, and after months of rigorous study, he cleared them. The triumph was sweet—Ravi finally felt like he had achieved something significant.

As he prepared to join his new role, Ravi was filled with hope. A government job symbolized everything he thought he wanted: prestige, stability, and the chance to make a difference.

But as Ravi would soon discover, the reality of his new role wasn’t as rosy as he had imagined. The systemic challenges, bureaucracy, and personal struggles ahead would test his resilience like never before. What seemed like the end of his journey was only the beginning of a much bigger story.
